A man from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh was sentenced to jail on charges of murder of a woman , however, later the same dead victim was traced alive, living and working in Maharashtra.
Here’s What Happened
On March 22, 2018, one Yogendra Kumar, a resident of Mohalla Jurakhankheda in Sadar Kotwali area, filed a complaint in Aasivan police station against Pramod Verma who lived in the same locality. Kumar accused Verma of kidnapping his wife Shweta Gupta.
Twelve days later, on April 2, 2018, a burnt body of an unknown woman was found near Sherpur Kalan village of Thana area. Husband Kumar was called in for identification, and he claimed that the same belonged to his wife based on the accessories and clothes that remained on the body.
Thereafter, the alleged accused Verma was held by the then SO Siyaram Verma and presented before local court. Judge Jaishankar Singh sentenced him to jail.
Pramod spent 14-months in jail, while frequently attending court dates for his trial.
Woman Found Alive
In a shocking turn of events, truth unfolded when the ATM card of a bank account opened in Mumbai, reached the original village address of the woman since her Aadhar (identification) card was registered on same.

After acquiring the information of the ATM card from the woman’s family, SO Rajesh Singh got hold of the DNA report of the burnt woman from the court. Thereafter, a DNA test was conducted on Shweta’s daughter Gauri and other relatives. The same did not match with the DNA of dead woman’s body and this compelled the police to re-open their investigation.
After a search was launched, the woman was found near Miyaganj intersection of Aasivan. SP Anand Kulkarni honoured the team who busted the case and awarded them Rs 10,000.
Woman’s Justification
Shweta, in her clarification said, that she was adopted by Shraddha and Munnu Babu Gupta. She was married off to Kumar after she completed her class eight. Unhappy with her husband’s behaviour, she left home on pretext of going for an exam.
When she reached Mumbai, a woman named Shabana got Shweta a job in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. She subsequently started living with a man named Avinash.
Body Still Unclaimed
The main challenge for the police now is to investigate who did the body belonged to. The SP said that Pramod Verma will be now freed from the jail and also strict action will be taken against the real culprits by conducting a detailed investigation.
What happens to the lost 14-months of an innocent man? Why is there no enquiry on the husband who got the accused arrested on a false charge? Why is there no questioning of the officials who failed to match the DNA of the body and the missing wife. In India, justice is a relative term.
