Daughter Of Texas Cop Killed In Ambush Slammed For Pro-Cop Tweet

When two cops were killed in a weekend ambush in McAllen, Texas, the daughter of one of the police officers took to social media to post a moving tribute to her late dad. After closing the post with the hashtag #bluelivesmatter, however, she was relentlessly slammed on Twitter.

Savannah Chavez was devastated when she lost her father, Officer Ismael Chavez, a 39-year-old McAllen, Texas police officer who was gunned down while responding to a domestic disturbance along with fellow McAllen cop, 45-year-old Edelmiro Garza. When the officers arrived at the scene of the domestic violence call, they were shot and killed in an ambush, according to Police Chief Victor Rodriguez.

The police chief said Officers Chavez and Garza “never had a chance” when the gunman, later identified as 23-year-old Audon Ignacio Camarillo, opened fire in the South Texas border town that fateful Saturday. According to the NY Post, Camarillo shot and killed himself before he could be arrested — but not before gunning down Chavez and Garza, whose bodies were found when their colleagues arrived.

“We have lost two brave public servants who sought only to keep peace in our City,” Rodriguez, visibly distraught, told The McAllen Monitor. “They were doing their job. That is what they were supposed to do,” he added. “The officers never had a chance to suspect deadly assault on them, much less death.”

Of course, Rodriguez wasn’t the only one devastated by the loss of the two Texas police officers. Savannah Chavez was also distraught over her father’s senseless and tragic death. In a since-deleted Twitter post made on the same day her father died, Savannah paid tribute to her dad. “Words cannot describe the pain I’m in, but I’m glad my dad is at peace,” Savannah wrote, according to Heavy.

“You were an amazing man and anyone who ever came across you knew that. I’m going to miss you so much,” the distraught daughter continued in the post, which included photos of her father. “You died doing what you loved most, you died a hero,” Savannah added before concluding the post, “I love you daddy, see you soon. #bluelivesmatter 💙.”

The post received its fair share of heartfelt sympathy, but sadly, according to the NY Post, Savannah’s tribute was up just long enough to also garner plenty of hatred from Twitter users, who did not approve of her allegedly “racist” hashtag choice. “Being a cop is a choice. Lmao and last time I checked, blue people don’t exist. Maybe educate yourself?” one such person tweeted. Others weren’t any nicer:

“Blue lives matter was literally created in response to and to undermine black lives matter. There’s no other connotation unfortunately,” another wrote, while yet another, who identified herself as a high school student, added, “I am so sorry for your loss but you didn’t have to use a racist hashtag,” according to the NY Post. Unfortunately, the lambasting didn’t end there.

In fact, Savannah’s tribute drew so much disdain that the Facebook page for comedian “Officer Daniels,” who typically makes and posts funny police-related videos, decided to weigh in. “Two officers in Texas were killed in an ambush responding to a domestic violence call. The daughter of one of the slain officers posted on Twitter to mourn the loss of her father. I need the silent major[ity] to speak up. Let’s flood this post with love and empathy for her,” he wrote in a post.

Officer Daniels included screenshots of the hateful comments Savannah has received, many of which included the hashtag #ACAB, which means “All Cops Are Bastards.” Thankfully, not everyone was quite so hateful, and many chimed in, telling critics to show some compassion. Those claiming to know Officer Chavez described him as “the most loving and caring person anyone could ever meet!” Others also offered tributes to the slain police officer, recalling his respectful and kind demeanor and past work as a coach and science teacher.

During a time when our hearts should break for the family members who lost a loved one in an unprovoked attack, others saw an opportunity to launch an attack of their own, and it’s downright disrespectful. This is a grieving daughter, who lost her father. These men served bravely and were killed while protecting residents in their community. They should be honored with their family members kept in our prayers — not put on the receiving end of backlash in a trial of public opinion.
