Bengaluru Woman Who Went Missing From COVID Ambulance Staged Her Own Kidnapping

Archana (name changed) was told that she tested positive on September 4, a day after an alleged Covid-19 screening camp was held in Bommanahalli in Bengaluru. An ambulance was sent to pick her up and her family had not seen her since.

Bengaluru Police have now alleged that the 28-year-old woman who went missing had staged her own kidnapping. The police have described the woman’s planned disappearance as a runaway case.

Case:

After Archana went missing, her husband had filed a missing complaint with the city police in this regard. When the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) was informed about the incident, they shockingly confirmed that no such screening camp was held from their side on the given date and that the ambulance too did not belong to them.

The ambulance was reportedly a private van and no screening or testing was performed by the BBMP in that locality on the said time.

The BBMP further stated that they do not pick up patients without sending SMSes with the driver’s phone number, identity details and also all govt ambulances have GPS and end-to-end tracking is done.

Woman Traced To Delhi

The Bengaluru police have traced the woman to Delhi’s Paharganj area. In their statement, the city police said that the 28-year-old customer service executive and her husband had a dispute, after which she planned to leave her house. She also sought help of her friend to execute the plan.

How Did She Plan Kidnapping

On September 8, Archana herself called up the investigating officer to confirm that she was safe and would sort out the matter with her husband later. The Bengaluru police recorded and played the woman’s call to the complainant husband, who identified the voice to be that of his wife.

After the police investigation, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) accused the woman’s family of distorting and misrepresenting facts to the police.

On Sunday, Captain P Manivannan, special officer for Bommanahalli zone, said that the department would file a criminal complaint against the family for “suppressing facts and misleading the authorities”.

Meanwhile, Archana’s brother-in-law, Vikas Kumar insisted that she has genuinely been kidnapped. He said,

If she wanted to run away, she could have done so before. She used to move around freely. In fact, on the afternoon of September 3, she even attended a job interview in Adugodi. She could have run away then. Who would go to the extent of setting up an elaborate fake Covid testing camp and a fake ambulance?

The woman’s brother-in-law earlier said that four people wearing PPE kits came to their home on September 3 and took samples of the entire family and neighbours. Then two people came the next day saying his sister had turned COVID-19 positive and had to be shifted to the hospital. He said,

They took samples of our family members and also the neighbourhood. But the next day, two men came in an ambulance, saying my sister-in-law was Covid positive and she had to be shifted to Prashanth Hospital. They didn’t allow her to take her phone, saying it was not allowed inside the hospital. They asked me and my brother-in-law to come to the hospital later.

When the woman’s brother reached the hospital, he was informed that no such patient has come.
