70-Year-Old Bihar Man Carves Canal For Thirty Long Years To Save Water For Villagers

A 70-year-old man from Bihar has spent thirty long years to carve out a three-kilometre-long canal at Kothilawa village in Lathua area of Gaya. Commendably, he has done this all by himself for the betterment of the people in his village.

The concern of rainwater coming down from nearby hills to the fields in his village could be dangerous for the ones living there as well as the farms. Laungi Bhuiyan took the initiative to get some solution with a view to save water, however, it took his three long decades. Quoting to the media, Laungi said,

It took me 30 years to dig this canal which takes the water to a pond in the village. I did it on my own without anyone’s help in Gaya.

Adding further, he said,

For the last 30 years, I would go to the nearby jungle to tend my cattle and dig out the canal. No one joined me in this endeavour. Villagers are going to cities to earn a livelihood but I decided to stay back.

The Kothilawa village is around 80 km away from Gaya district headquarters which is surrounded
by dense forest and mountains. This village also happens to be marked as a refuge for Maoists. The main livelihood for the locals here is farming and animal husbandry.

Whenever the rainy season would arrive, the water falling from the mountains used to flow into the river and that kept bothering Bhuiyan. This is when he had decided of carving out a canal. He toiled very hard considering he was alone. The sole objective was to save water that flew down from the mountains, thereby, making it an advantage for the villagers.

Patti Manjhi, a local says,

He has been carving out the canal for the last 30 years that too single-handedly. This will benefit a large number of animals and to irrigate the fields as well. He is not doing it for his own benefit but for the entire area.
