Kolkata Woman Steals Rs 35 Lakh Through ATM Card Of Dead Employer; Arrested

A case from Kolkata has been reported where a woman employee allegedly stole the ATM card of her employer after he passed away. She was thereafter recognized through CCTV along with her partner while stealing money.

Satyanarayan Agrawal, died during the first week of lockdown. He lived in an upmarket residential complex of South Kolkata. He has a son who lives in another flat. The deceased man’s mobile number was switched off and hence, the bank started sending SMS alerts to his family members.

45-year-old accused woman, identified as Rita Roy, was a widow and a resident of Nakashiparawas, who continued working as domestic help at Agrawal’s home. She, along with the assistance of her son-in-law Ranjit Mallick and brother-in-law Saumitra Sarkar, managed to steal approximately Rs 35 Lakh from the account of the deceased man.

Here’s How She Managed

Employer’s son Anurag had saved the card’s PIN in his father’s mobile phone as a text message, since he used to forget it repeatedly. Roy managed to obtain that pin through SMS and started withdrawing money from his account. Murlidhar Sharma, Joint CP (Crime), confirmed,

The exact amount withdrawn was Rs 34,90,000. The trio had been withdrawing money for the last 71 days through several ATMs. SMS Alerts from the bank were sent to the employer’s son.

Rita’s wrong doings came into light when Anurag went to the bank and learnt details of his father’s account. He later detected the theft and lodged a complaint at Jadavpur police station on June 1. The case was then taken over by the detective department at Lal Bazar police headquarters.

The son got hold of all records from Yes Bank, where Agrawal had an account, and the same showed that the money had been withdrawn from ATMs of various branches at Karimpur, Krishannagar, and Ranaghat in Nadia and Guptipara in Hoogly between March 20 and May 30. The accused was nabbed by the police when they used the transaction details and CCTV footage of the ATMs from where the money had been withdrawn. The security camera footage from these ATM Kiosks showed that the thieves wore masks and caps inside the counters, which usually is not allowed, however, they took the advantage of the pandemic.

As face recognition was difficult, the detectives started tapping locals and caught Mallick and Sarkar on Thursday. Sharma added,

With no other lead, CCTV footage was shown to local sources and a ground survey was carried out around the ATMs. Finally, we identified both Mullick and Sarkar and they were arrested on August 13 from their respective residences.

When the two accused were interrogated, they revealed Roy’s name, and subsequently, she was arrested from her residence in the Nakashipara area of Nadia district on the very same day.

Police raided homes of the accused and prime accused and recovered Rs 27 lakh. They all will be in Police custody until August 25, cited Sharma. The police has called this a ‘rare case’.
