Con Brides From Madhya Pradesh Who Duped Several Grooms Of Cash & Jewelry Arrested

The concept of Looteri Dulhan or con bride was highlighted in 2015 Bollywood release Dolly Ki Doli. Several such cases are getting reported, especially in regional media almost on a weekly basis. Stories of brides getting married, following all rituals and disappearing from home within 15-days has become a common phenomenon. One such case has been reported from Madhya Pradesh.

Few women and other members of the group trapped around a dozen of eligible grooms and their families in Bhopal. The members of the group would trick the men and their parents, acting like the bride’s family members. They would then get the woman married successfully into those homes, and within few days, the bride would make some excuse and leave the house, stating she is going to visit her ‘fake’ family in Bhopal.

After the woman would leave, every member of the gang would switch off their mobile phones. However, before doing so, they would ensure to grab all cash and jewelry from the boy’s home. Despite so many men getting trapped by this gang, no family came forward to file a case against them, to safeguard their reputation in society.

The other members of the group also happened to live in the same city at their respective residences. They would call the prospects to meet the women on account of knowing each other and getting married.

Grooms Who Were Conned

Hoshangabad resident Jagdish Meena is one of the victims, who married Pooja alias Ria, Maya. They were told that the girl hailed from Baitul in Madhya Pradesh. After nearly 15-days into marriage, the other gang members, who claimed to be the relatives of the bride, reached Jagdish’s place and took her to Bhopal. Kalapipal resident Kanta Prasad Nath met Pooja alias Ria at Anand Nagar intersection and liked her at once. He later also gave her Rs 80,000. The duo got married, and soon their leader Pandey called Ria to Bhopal citing sister’s illness as an excuse. When Kanta Prasad contacted the family, he was told that his wife was married off to someone else.

Our Take:

  • While there are no written guidelines on how to identify the right match, it is always advisable to do some background check before tying the knot
  • It is also critical for a couple to spend some time (at least six months) to understand each other well
  • Again, there have been cases where couples have dated for 5 years and divorced within a year of marriage
  • However, the time spent together before tying the knot, will allow men to get some understanding of whether the woman is genuine or someone only with ulterior motives
