  • Toys R Us' final day of business was Friday, June 29.
  • The toy retailer posted a thank-you message to all of its customers, past and present, encouraging them to "play on!" in the store's absence.
  • Toys R Us filed a motion to liquidate its US business in March, initiating the closing or selling of all 735 of its US stores.

Toys R Us is saying goodbye.

The toy retailer is ending its run on Friday, June 29, closing all stores and wrapping up its going-out-of-business sales. That day marks the true end of the retailer's presence in the United States.

On Friday, the retailer posted one final goodbye message on its website, which hasn't been active since it stopped accepting online orders in March.

Here's the message:

Thanks to each of you who shared your amazing journey to (and through) parenthood with us, and to every grandparent, aunt, uncle, brother, and sister who's built a couch-cushion rocket ship, made up a hero adventure, or invented something gooey. Promise us just this one thing: Don't ever grow up. Play on!

The second-to-last line, "Don't ever grow up," is a riff on Toys R Us' famous jingle: "I don't want to grow up, I'm a Toys R Us kid."

From June 29 forward, there will be no more Toys R Us kids, sadly.

It's an unceremonious end for a retailer that was once known as a "category killer," meaning it was so good at one thing that it drove independent stores out of business.

Toys R Us filed a motion to liquidate its US business in March, initiating the closing or selling of all 735 of its US stores.

That doesn't mean it's the end of the Toys R Us brand, however. Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. bought the dying company's profitable Canadian stores, which will continue to operate under the Toys R Us name, and the brand is likely to live on in some form in Asia.
