I get a facial every month — here's why it's the best thing you can do for your skin

herbal facial still

I didn't used to believe in facials. I used to scroll past selfie-style Instagram videos of bloggers and celebrities joined by an anonymous pair of hands massaging masks and scrubs onto their skin and roll my eyes. I wondered how overpaying someone to apply products similar to what I have on my bathroom counter could really make a difference in my skin. Then I got a facial, and I can officially say that I have been converted.

Although — depending on the type you sign up for — they can definitely set you back a significant chunk of change, facials restore life, buoyancy, and resilience to your skin unlike anything else, so they're worth splurging on — if not every month, at least once per season. Let me tell you why.

They pick up where your pore strip left off.

Blackheads are the enemy, and we've all tried our fair share of at-home DIY treatments, pore strips, and peel masks to rid the skin of their presence. Although those methods can be partially effective, often times, we're still greeted by little lingering friends when we revisit the mirror. When I got a facial, I can honestly say it was the first time my pores were 100% clear since I started my battle with acne and clogged pores in middle school.

Certified estheticians use a safe and gentle steaming tool to fully open up the pores and extract the gunk from within. They also use a ridiculously bright light while performing extractions so they can be sure not to miss a single one — definitely a "Don't Try This At Home" technique. In an interview with Teen Vogue, Kate Somerville, facialist and founder of Skin Care by Kate Somerville likened the need for a regular facial to regular visits to the dentist. "You brush and floss your teeth twice daily, but you still need to go to the dentist a few times a year for optimal health," she said.

They're customizable to your skin type and concerns.

Choosing the right facial for your skin requires some research. There are dozens of types of facials offered by a range of dermatologists, salons, and spas, and you want to make sure you choose the one that will benefit your skin the most. There are treatments for dry skin, aging skin, eczema, cystic acne, laser treatments for dullness and elasticity, and more. Decide what skin issues you want to address and go from there.

When scheduling your appointment, don't be afraid to ask questions. Express what you're looking for and a professional will usually be able to recommend the best fit. If you have a price range, be sure to make that clear in advance so you're not getting blindsided with an unexpected bill after an hour-plus of pure relaxation.

They are stress relieving.

As always, the experience will vary by location and specialist, but when I got my first facial, I was numbingly relaxed by its end. Many spas and the like go the extra mile to provide a relaxing ambiance, soft music, and special treatment, making their guests feel like royalty. To boot, most facial and massage beds are heated, which makes you want to curl up in a ball and never leave.
