Amazon said Thursday that it has closed its acquisition of the video doorbell maker Ring, and it has slashed the price of Ring's most popular doorbell to $100 from $150.
The doorbell allows people to see, hear, and speak to anyone at their door through a smartphone, tablet, or any other WiFi-enabled device.
The deal to acquire Ring is reportedly worth more than $1 billion, making it one of Amazon's largest acquisitions in history.
The purchase will help Amazon expand its home security and new in-home delivery service, Amazon Key, which allows couriers to enter customers' houses to delivery packages when they aren't home.
In a release, Amazon said it plans to work with Ring to reduce crime in neighborhoods. The company cited statistics showing that Ring doorbells reduced burglaries in neighborhoods by as much as 55%.
"This is just the beginning — we will continue to move quickly and work hard to empower customers with a suite of security solutions that provide an affordable, effective way to secure homes and neighborhoods," said Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon devices and services.
